Adaptive SUP & Kayak in Copacabana

Adaptive SUP & Kayak at Sunrise in Copacabana

Imagine starting your day on the ocean, watching the sunrise from one of the most famous beaches in the world. The Adaptive SUP & Kayak at Sunrise in Copacabana experience was designed to make this special moment accessible to people with disabilities or reduced mobility, offering different SUP and kayak options according to each participant’s needs and level of independence.

The activity takes place in the early morning, when Copacabana has a unique atmosphere and the sunrise transforms the landscape of Rio de Janeiro.

More than just a water activity, it is an experience that combines the ocean, nature, inclusion, and independence.

An adaptive experience for different needs

Every person has different abilities and needs. For this reason, an assessment is carried out during the booking process to determine the most suitable option for each participant, considering factors such as mobility, balance, stability, trunk control, ability to paddle independently, and assistance needs.

This allows our team to prepare the appropriate equipment, adaptations, and assistance in advance.

The activity can be enjoyed independently or with the assistance of an instructor.

It is suitable for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, wheelchair users, older adults, children, people who are unable to paddle independently, and participants who require additional stability or assistance during the activity.

For children or participants who require additional support, our team evaluates their needs during the booking process to determine the most appropriate option and level of assistance for a safe experience.

For participants who do not require adaptations, traditional Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is also available, allowing family members, friends, and companions to enjoy the experience together.

Available Options

Kayak – Independent Paddling

This option uses a single kayak with a double-bladed paddle.

It is especially suitable for participants with good stability and the ability to paddle independently, including people with paraplegia, older adults, and people with reduced mobility.

The seated position and double-bladed paddle provide greater stability and make paddling easier.

Includes: kayak, paddle, life jacket, and the necessary equipment for the activity.

Adaptive Kayak – Assisted Paddling

This option takes place in an adaptive tandem kayak, accompanied by an instructor who is responsible for paddling.

It was developed especially for participants who require additional support or are unable to paddle independently, including people with tetraplegia or other mobility conditions requiring assistance.

Includes: adaptive kayak, paddle, life jacket, necessary adaptive support, and instructor.

Seated SUP – Independent Paddling

In this option, the Stand Up Paddleboard is equipped with a seat, allowing the participant to enjoy the activity while seated and use a double-bladed paddle.

It is particularly suitable for participants with good stability and independence, including people with paraplegia who wish to paddle independently.

Includes: SUP board, seat, double-bladed paddle, life jacket, and necessary equipment.

Seated SUP – Assisted Paddling

The experience takes place on a SUP board equipped with a seat and includes assistance from an instructor.

It is an alternative for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, older adults, children, and participants who have sufficient stability to remain seated but prefer or require assistance during the experience.

Includes: SUP board, seat, paddle, life jacket, and instructor assistance.

Stand-Up SUP – Independent Paddling

For participants who do not require adaptations, the traditional Stand Up Paddleboarding experience is also available.

This allows family members, friends, and companions to participate in the same experience even when using different options.

Includes: SUP board, paddle, life jacket, and necessary equipment.

How does the experience work?

The activity begins before sunrise.

Arrival is scheduled between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., depending on the time of year and the sunrise time, allowing enough time for preparation, instructions, and organizing participants before entering the water.

Before the activity begins, the team provides safety instructions and guidance on how to use the equipment. The equipment, adaptations, and activity option for each participant will already have been determined during the booking process.

The use of a life jacket is mandatory during the activity.

Time on the water is approximately 40 to 60 minutes, depending on conditions and the participants’ profiles.

Including reception, preparation, equipment adaptations, safety instructions, time on the water, and completion of the activity, the entire experience lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Accessibility and Assistance

The purpose of the experience is to adapt the activity to the person, rather than expecting the person to adapt to a single activity format.

Different equipment, adaptations, and forms of assistance can therefore be provided according to each participant’s needs.

When necessary, a beach wheelchair can also be used to assist with access to the beach and the process of entering the water.

For travelers who would like to use this equipment on other days of their trip, Turismo Acessível also offers beach wheelchair rental in Rio de Janeiro, with delivery and pickup available in areas of Rio’s South Zone.

Our team provides assistance throughout the experience, from preparation and beach access to the participant’s return from the water.

Who can participate?

The experience was designed for different participant profiles, including:

  • People with physical disabilities;

  • People with paraplegia or tetraplegia;

  • Wheelchair users;

  • People with reduced mobility;

  • Older adults;

  • Children;

  • People who are unable to paddle independently;

  • People who require additional stability or assistance;

  • Family members and companions;

  • Participants without disabilities who would like to enjoy traditional SUP.

Participation and the most appropriate activity option are evaluated in advance during the booking process, taking into account each participant’s individual abilities and needs.

For children and participants requiring additional assistance, our team will also assess the conditions and support needed for the experience to be carried out safely.

Safety First

A life jacket is required for all activity options, and participants receive safety instructions before entering the water.

The activity also takes sea and weather conditions into consideration. Changes in weather do not necessarily result in automatic cancellation, as conditions are assessed by the team responsible for the operation.

Whenever necessary, adjustments may be made to prioritize safety and provide the best possible experience.

A Different Way to Experience Copacabana

Copacabana is known around the world for its beach, iconic promenade, and spectacular scenery. Experiencing this setting from the water at sunrise offers a completely different perspective of Rio de Janeiro.

For a person with a disability or reduced mobility, access to experiences like this also represents something fundamental: the opportunity to participate in activities at the destination with safety, assistance, and greater independence.
