Curitiba is one of the Brazilian cities that entered the 21st century as a national and international benchmark in urban planning and quality of life, according to a research sponsored by the United Nations (UN) in March 2001.
With a culture strongly influenced by Italian, German, Polish and Ukrainian immigrants, the capital of the State of Paraná was elected American Capital of Culture in 2003 by the organization of the same name. This is soon noticed by those who come and notice the architecture, gastronomy and local customs.
Parks and green areas are highlights of the city. Residents pride themselves on maintaining approximately 51 m² of green space per inhabitant, three times more than recommended by the United Nations. In addition, modern architecture blends with these natural corners, giving a unique touch to the landscape of the city.
The most visited Park in Curitiba is the Botanical Garden, a must-see in the city. The park opened in 1991 and 40% of its area is remnant native forest. The glass and iron greenhouse is one of the main postcards of the city. In front of the greenhouse, the geometric garden with the sculpture of the mother. The Botanical Garden has lakes, trails, sports fields and lots of vegetation. In summer the park is very pleasant at night.
Another very popular and surprising place is Parque Tanguá. At the top is the Poty Lazzarotto Garden, a viewpoint, a waterfall.
The Oscar Niemeyer Museum, known as the Museum of the Eye with a modern design that makes it one of the most outstanding museums in Latin America.
The Arame Opera, inaugurated in 1992, hosts all kinds of shows, from popular to classics, and has a capacity for 1,572 spectators.
One of the two most important cultural heritage sites in the city and the century-old Cathedral, the Basilica of Nossa Senhora da Luz dos Pinhais, it was in this region that Curitiba was founded in 1693. In the neo-Gothic cathedral is the image of Nossa Senhora da Luz dos Pinhais, patron saint of the city.
Curitiba's climate demands hot dishes. The meat, cheese and fruit fondue can be found in good restaurants in the capital of Paraná.
